UK Pilgrimage of Trust

Since the 1980s, the Taizé Community has invited the numerous visitors to its international meetings to set out on a “pilgrimage of trust”. The fund aims to support initiatives taken in the UK to live out this pilgrimage.

The Community was founded by Br Roger in 1940. It is interdenominational. Taize is in France, in Burgundy, near the historic site of the Abbey of Cluny. It is accessible by motorway or fast train and in the summer a shuttle coach travels direct to Taize from the UK. The community also arranges other meetings around the world, mainly for younger people, especially the annual European meeting in a large city (This year in Poland, next rin Milan) attended by many thousands across New Year.

The UK Pilgrimage of Trust Fund is working to tell more young people from Britain about Taizé, and in particular the school and college weeks programme-

The fund has already made it possible for young, long-term volunteers at Taizé to visit UK schools in order to encourage trips to Taizé. It also makes targeted grants to schools to enable the participation of some pupils who are unable to afford the whole cost of the trip, especially if higher than usual travel costs may be involved. It can consider assisting pilot trips. If your school or college could benefit from the fund, do contact UKPT at

The fund is independent of the Taizé Community but works with its full knowledge and support. The trustees are Jonathan Hewitt (Hexham), Rachel McWalter (York) and Nick Shields (Wakefield). The fund has obtained recognition  and authority from HMRC to accept Gift Aided contributions.

One Week in July is the name of a DVD, professionally produced with the aid of a charitable fund to tell young people about Taize “Schools Weeks”- with a lot of input from the young people who were there.
